What is divorce counselling?

Divorce counselling, also called divorce counseling, divorce therapy or separation counselling, is support from a trained counselor for anyone facing the end, or the possible end, of a marriage. It can help a couple decide whether to separate, help one or both partners cope while a divorce is happening, and help each person rebuild life afterwards. Your counselor does not take sides or decide for you. The aim is to help you make your own decisions with a clear mind.

Where are you right now?

People come to us at every stage. Wherever you are, you can start here.

  • Deciding whether to divorce

Not sure if the marriage can be repaired, or if it is time to part.

  • Going through a divorce

Stress, anger, grief and family pressure while the process goes on.

  • After the divorce

Moving on, rebuilding confidence and, when you are ready, a new relationship.

  • Children and co-parenting

Helping children cope and parents work together, even when the marriage has ended.

What we work on

Every situation is different. These are the areas people most often bring to divorce counselling.

  • Clarity before a decision

Honest conversations about what went wrong and what, if anything, can change.

  • A last attempt, if you both want it

Focused sessions to see whether the marriage can be repaired.

  • Difficult emotions

Anger, guilt, grief, fear and loneliness, one step at a time.

  • Family and social pressure

Parents, in-laws and worry about what people will say.

  • Co-parenting

Talking to children, agreeing on routines and keeping conflict away from them.

  • Starting again

Self-confidence, trust and readiness for a new relationship or second marriage.

Ending a marriage is one of the hardest things a person can face.

Asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

What divorce counselling does not include

We focus on the emotional side of separation: helping you think clearly, cope well and protect your children. We do not give legal advice, help with settlements or alimony, carry out custody evaluations or write reports for court. For those matters, please speak to a family lawyer. Many people see a lawyer and a counselor side by side.

A real story

From our case studies.

  • A new start after an abusive marriage

Suchitra left a first marriage marked by abuse and was raising her daughter alone. When a second marriage was proposed, to a widower with a son, she felt unsure and afraid. Over a few sessions she talked through her past and her worries, and a joint session with her future husband covered expectations and raising two children together. They married, and both children now get along well.

Common questions

Can divorce counselling save my marriage?

Sometimes. Some couples arrive sure they want to separate and realise they want to try again. Others reach a calm, shared decision to part. Your counselor will not push you either way. The aim is to help you decide with a clear mind, and if you both want to try again, to work on the marriage through marriage counseling.

Can I come alone if my spouse does not want to?

Yes. Many people start on their own. It can help you understand your feelings, cope with the situation and decide what you want, whatever your spouse chooses.

Is divorce counselling the same as divorce therapy?

Yes. Divorce counselling, divorce counseling and divorce therapy all describe the same kind of support: talking with a trained counselor about separation and what comes after it.

Do you give legal advice or help with divorce papers?

No. We do not give legal advice, help with settlements or alimony, do custody evaluations or write reports for court. For these, please consult a family lawyer. We support you emotionally through the process.

Can you help our children cope?

Yes. We help parents talk to their children about the separation and agree on how to co-parent. Where the whole family needs support, family counseling sessions are also available.

Will my family be told what I share?

No. What you share stays with your counselor. Nobody in your family is informed unless you want them to be involved.

How much does divorce counselling cost?

Counseling at Sambandhah costs ₹2,500 per hour. The length of a session is not fixed and depends on your situation. We explain everything on the call before you book.
