Depression Counseling in Ahmedabad: How Talking Can Help

Feeling low now and then is part of life. But when sadness, emptiness or tiredness stays for weeks and starts to affect your sleep, work, studies or relationships, it may be depression. If you are reading this for yourself, or for someone you love, please know that depression is common, it is not a sign of weakness, and help is available.
What depression can look like
Depression shows up differently in different people. Some of the common signs are:
- Feeling sad, empty or hopeless for most of the day, nearly every day
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Sleeping much more or much less than usual, or changes in appetite
- Feeling tired all the time, even after rest
- Finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions
- Feeling worthless or guilty without a clear reason
- Pulling away from family and friends
- Thoughts that life is not worth living
Having some of these signs does not automatically mean you have depression, and only a qualified professional can diagnose it. But if several of them sound familiar and have lasted more than two weeks, it is worth talking to someone.
Counseling and medical care: how they work together
Counseling is a talking therapy. It does not replace a doctor. For moderate or severe depression, many people need both: a psychiatrist or doctor who can assess them and, if needed, prescribe medicine, and a counselor who helps them work through what they are going through.
At Sambandhah we are counselors, not doctors. If we feel you need medical support, we will tell you honestly and encourage you to see one. Counseling can continue alongside medical care.
How counseling can help
- A safe space to talk. Many people carry their feelings alone for a long time. Saying them out loud, to someone who listens without judging, is often a relief in itself.
- Understanding what lies underneath. Low mood is often linked to something else: stress in a marriage, conflict at home, a loss, loneliness or pressure at work. A counselor helps you make sense of it.
- Practical ways to cope. You learn to notice negative thoughts, question them, and respond to them differently.
- Rebuilding routine and connection. Small, steady changes in daily life and in relationships can make a real difference over time.
- Involving family when it helps. Sometimes a partner or family member joins a session, so that the people around you can support you better.

Small steps that can help alongside support
These are not a cure, and they are not a replacement for professional help, but they can make the days a little easier:
- Tell one person you trust how you have been feeling.
- Keep a simple routine: regular sleep, regular meals.
- Move your body a little every day, even a short walk.
- Avoid alcohol and other substances, which tend to make low mood worse.
- Write down your thoughts. It can help you see patterns and talk about them later.
If you are in crisis
If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you feel you cannot keep yourself safe, please do not wait for a counseling appointment. Call 112 for emergencies, go to the nearest hospital, or call Tele-MANAS, the Government of India’s free 24×7 mental health helpline, on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416.
Frequently asked questions
Can counseling cure depression?
No one can honestly promise a cure or a guaranteed result. Many people do feel better with the right support, and counseling is one important part of that. How long it takes is different for every person.
Do I need to see a psychiatrist?
If your symptoms are severe, have lasted a long time, or include thoughts of self-harm, please see a psychiatrist or doctor. Counseling can continue alongside medical care.
Is what I share kept confidential?
Yes. Your details and anything you share in a session are not shared with anyone else.
How do I book a session?
Send a request on our appointment page. Someone from Sambandhah will call you to understand your concern and book a time that suits you.
Talking to someone is often the first step. Whenever you feel ready, request an appointment and we will take it from there, together.
