Online Counseling for NRIs and Indian Families Abroad

Online Counseling for NRIs and Indian Families Abroad

Living abroad changes many things about family life. A couple in Canada may be dealing with relationship stress and in-law pressure from India at the same time. A young professional in Dubai may be preparing for an arranged marriage with someone they have met only on video calls. Parents in Australia may be raising a teenager torn between two cultures. In all these situations, talking to a counselor who understands Indian families can make a real difference, and today distance is no longer a barrier.

This guide explains how online counseling works for NRIs and Indian families living outside India, what it can help with, and how to get the most out of it.

Why NRIs often look for an Indian counselor

There are good counselors in every country, but many people abroad tell us they prefer someone who understands their background without long explanations. That includes:

  • Joint family expectations and the role of parents and in-laws, even across continents
  • Arranged marriage, family introductions and the pressure around marriage decisions
  • Differences in values between partners who grew up in different places
  • Guilt about living far from ageing parents
  • Being able to slip into your mother tongue when feelings are hard to express in English

Common reasons NRIs seek online counseling

Marriage and relationship stress

Long working hours, isolation from family support and the pressure of building a life in a new country can strain even strong marriages. Marriage counseling online gives couples a neutral place to talk.

Long-distance relationships

When one partner is abroad and the other is in India, or both are in different countries, trust and communication need extra care. Online sessions let both partners join from where they are.

Preparing for marriage

Many couples meet through family introductions and have only a few conversations before the wedding. Premarital counseling online helps them talk about expectations, careers, where to live, and family roles before they commit.

In-law and family pressure from a distance

Distance does not always reduce family pressure. Sometimes it increases it, through daily phone calls, long visits or decisions made back home. Counseling helps couples agree on boundaries together.

Parenting across two cultures

Teenagers raised abroad may see the world very differently from their parents. One family we worked with lived abroad and had almost stopped talking to their teenage daughter. Over about a year of mostly online sessions they found a way back to each other. You can read their story here.

Personal stress, loneliness and big decisions

Isolation, visa uncertainty, job pressure or the decision to move back to India can weigh heavily. One-to-one counseling gives you space to think.

How online counseling works

  1. Send a request. Use the appointment form or WhatsApp. Tell us briefly what is happening and which country you are in.
  2. We call you. We understand your concern, explain how sessions and fees work, and suggest a counselor. You can ask for a female or male counselor.
  3. Choose a time that suits your time zone. Sessions are available every day from 9 am to 9 pm India time (IST). The list below shows roughly what that means where you live.
  4. Join by private video call or phone. Couples can join from the same room or from two different places.

What 9 am to 9 pm India time means where you live

  • UAE and Oman: 7:30 am to 7:30 pm
  • Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain: 6:30 am to 6:30 pm
  • Singapore: 11:30 am to 11:30 pm
  • UK: 3:30 am to 3:30 pm (4:30 am to 4:30 pm during British Summer Time)
  • US and Canada, East Coast: 10:30 pm (the evening before) to 10:30 am, or 11:30 pm to 11:30 am during daylight saving time
  • US and Canada, West Coast: 7:30 pm (the evening before) to 7:30 am, or 8:30 pm to 8:30 am during daylight saving time
  • Australia, Sydney and Melbourne: 2:30 pm to 2:30 am during daylight saving time (October to April), or 1:30 pm to 1:30 am the rest of the year

If none of these hours suits you, tell us when we call and we will see what is possible.

Fees

Online sessions cost ₹2,500 per hour, the same as sessions at our centre in Ahmedabad. How long each session lasts depends on your situation, and we explain the details on the call before anything is booked.

Does online counseling work as well as meeting in person?

For most relationship and family concerns, online sessions work very well. Many people find it easier to open up from the comfort of their own home. A few practical tips make a big difference:

  • Find a private room where family members or flatmates cannot overhear
  • Use headphones, and keep notifications off during the session
  • Check your internet connection beforehand, and keep a phone ready in case the video drops
  • Give yourself ten quiet minutes after the session instead of rushing straight back to work

Online counseling is not suitable in an emergency. If you or someone close to you is in danger, please contact local emergency services in the country where you are.

Confidentiality when you are far from home

Many NRIs worry that a counselor in India might somehow be connected to their family or community back home. What you share stays with your counselor, and your family is not contacted unless you want them to be involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse in India and I join the same session from different countries?

Yes. Each of you can join the video call from where you are. Many couples in long-distance marriages attend this way.

Can sessions be in a language other than English?

Yes. Sessions are available in Gujarati, Hindi, English and Telugu (Telugu sessions are with Ms. Srilatha). Tell us your preferred language when we call, and we will match you with a counselor who speaks it.

How much does online counseling cost?

₹2,500 per hour, the same as at our centre. There are no hidden charges; the fee is confirmed on the call before your first session.

Can we meet in person when we visit India?

Yes. Many families combine online sessions with an in-person session at our centre in Ahmedabad during a visit home.

To read more about how sessions work, see our page on online counseling, or send a request and we will call you at a time that suits your time zone.
